Half Apron Inspiration

Tutorials abound on the internet for those wanting to learn something new. For me lately it's been sewing. I'm a beginner, and it's hard to find beginner-level directions to sew things properly that aren't hokey and/or look obviously homemade. This tutorial for a half apron is fantastic, and if you're in the same boat I am skill-wise then you'll find it easy to follow too. I made mine longer because I'm messier than most!

  1. Love the choices of material, they go really well together. In fact the whole apron looks extremely professional, well done!

  2. Thank you very much! Going into a material store is like going into a candy store. There’s so much to choose from, and i want some of everything. It’s not as bad on the teeth as a candy store of course, but just as bad on the wallet! haha

  3. thanks it’s a nice idea i’m so excited to begin one like it

  4. Now that’s what I call ‘stylish’ it would almost be a shame to get it messy haha! Love the floral detail to the side.

  5. Hi! I’m also a beginner in sewing. Like you,the material store is a candy store and I’ve just spent so much on materials yesterday! I am so excited and am searching for a nice (fairly easy) apron tutorial and I came upon here! Your apron looks fabulous! One question though – what kind of stitch did you use on the flowers? And what is the length if your apron? The friend I am making this for is fairly tall and I just am not sure how much longer to make it. :) Thank you!

  6. Hi Michelle – Congrats on taking up a new hobby! I’m really having fun with it. For this project, the finished apron here is 23 inches long overall, that’s from top of waistband to bottom of ruffle. I’m about 5′ 3″ tall, so that gives you an idea how the length falls on someone my height. I’ve made a couple of these aprons so far, so maybe I can give you some pointers on cutting measurements? ;) Decide:
    1) how wide you want it to be, which is kind of just half your waist measurement anyhow since it just goes half way around when you put it on (call this “apron width“)
    2) how long you want it to be (call this “apron length“), and
    3) how long you want the ties to be (call this “ties length“)

    Then your cutting guidelines become:
Main and lining fabric – cut one rectangular piece from each, apron width wide x apron length long
    From the coordinating fabric:
    Waistband – one, 12″ x apron width
    Ties – two, 8″ x ties length
Ruffle – two, 4″ x width of fabric (i found this was on the safe said and gave too much ruffle to work with, but better to have too much and cut off what you don’t need than have not enough!)

For the flower I just zig-zag stitched around the edge of all circles used to put the flower together. At first I did this just to prevent the material from fraying later, but I actually liked the look it gave the flower petal edges.

Hope this all helps…. I’d love to see the finished project!

  7. Man, I need an astronaut suit while cooking…*sigh*…haha.

  8. I’d need some special insulation to make you one of those. Or we could just put you in a bubble!
