The Land That Ugly Forgot The Bewildering, Beautiful and Blithe Happenings Around Vancouver, BC

Bird’s the Word

Usually feeding the birds is frowned upon because it encourages them to stick around, expect handouts and make a mess. On Granville Island there seems to be a bird-friendly area where throwing bread for the birds gets a green light. Kids love it. So do adults. Geese, pigeons and ducks, oh my!

Mirror, Mirror on the Boat

And they say it's just women who become preoccupied with admiring themselves in the rearview mirror while driving....

Look Up

The majestic trees at Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver are even more impressive when you look up and consider how small you are... and young. These trees have seen at least the past one hundred years, being second-growth forests planted at the turn of the last century.

Okanagan Life

A backyard view over Lake Okanagan. No wonder the Okanagan Valley is popular with retirees, hockey players and word was at one point that Arnold Schwarzenegger had a summer home here too. It's the closest thing we come to Arizona north of the 49th parallel.

A Line of Quails’ Gate Wine

The tasting bar at Quails' Gate Winery in West Kelowna was bustling this past weekend. Glasses were lined up and ready to go. They must have a high capacity dishwasher for fine stemware, or somebody with quick but dishpan hands!
Even if you aren't a wine drinker, the vistas alone are worth a visit...

Purple Haze

No wonder a scene like this attracts insects. The interest of colours, the depths amongst the petals, the sticky pollen... it's like an amusement park, but for bees.

Get Your Walk On

Kelowna has done a great job of developing the waterfront and building a lovely boardwalk to get you from The Dolphins condos and The Okanagan Grand Resort Hotel to City Park. There was a break in the foot traffic here on Saturday.

Respect the Disrespectfulness

Living in an apartment complex requires some sort of respect for one another. Somebody was using the wrong storage locker and it's impossible for the rightfully designated owner to determine who it was, thus the posting of the notice. The tone of the note is perhaps a bit blunt and without some sort of middle ground like offering a telephone number to contact in case the contents could not be removed in time, nonetheless, was slashing of the note really necessary? I agree with the added handwritten comment -- what is wrong with people?

Baby You Can Drive My Car

Vancouver is definitely one of the coolest places to live, but the problem is a lot of people think so. This is what traffic at night on Highway #1 looks like if you were to look at the highway from an overpass and keep your eyes open for 10 seconds. Being a city of bridges, generally no matter when you're planning on going into or coming out of town, you have some sort of gridlock to deal with. Or facing the conundrum of where on earth to park the car that gets you downtown when you need to go downtown is another pitfall. And soon there's tolls coming on the new Port Mann bridge. No such thing as a free ride.

Seeking Carrots, Hay or Juicy Green Leaves

I guess pickings were slim for snacking because Mister Ed here was chowing down on the leaves of some prickly, thorny wild berry bushes by the fence. I often pass by this corner, which has a hobby farm with horse on one side and a convenience store/gas pump on the other side. I like how city and country can co-exist; over the years in Langley and Surrey, a lot of what was farmland has been sold and rezoned to residential to be developed into condensed housing. The co-existence of land uses saves the landscape from being boring housing upon housing developments. Save the farmland.
