What’s In a Name

I found these products on the shelves of the Ethnic section in my local Superstore (a Loblaw grocery retailer). If I were a buyer for Loblaws Grocery I would ask that all products with this branding be renamed to the option shown on left. Sometimes things don't sound so good when they're translated.

  1. Cock-a-doodle-do – Do they stock cockaleeky soup?

  2. Maybe on Scottish shelves! Unfortunately there was no such department to this Ethnic section though :(

  3. very funny! Actually there is another..chinese hot sauce with the rooster but name is never translated..maybe good that way. But we always have fun with this too:) As long as it is innocent..I love your space here..very cool! Best to you!

  4. Thanks for the compliments. And, btw, I like that hot sauce -> the Sriracha I think it is you’re referring to. Delicious! =)

  5. Rooster brand is owned by Loblaws. Cock brand is owned by another company. It’s a low brow attempt to imitate the real mccoy! Shame on them…

  6. So THAT’S the story! I guess they’re trying to westernize the brand to make it recognizable to people that know the original, yet appeal to those who don’t…
